Medical/Osteopathic Licensure

By statute no person shall engage or attempt to engage in the practice of medicine or osteopathy within the state unless the person holds a valid and effective license or permit issued by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.  The only exceptions to this statute are listed under KRS 311.560 (2).

It is essential to ensure that only qualified and competent physicians are licensed in Kentucky.  The Board is responsible for approval and verification of credentials of physicians applying for licensure.  The Board must certify that all applicants for initial licensure meet the requirements to practice medicine/osteopathy in the state.

The KBML’s licensing department is responsible for the processing of each application in accordance with the Board’s licensing statutes/regulations.   Board staff makes every effort to process applications in a timely manner and present to the Board for review and approval at its quarterly meetings.

Renewal of Physician Licenses

The Board is also responsible for physician annual renewal of licenses.  Reminder notices are mailed to all physicians holding an active license on December 15 each year.  Physicians renewing their medical/osteopathic license have the opportunity to renew their licenses on-line.
Renewal is due by March 1 of each year.  Renewals paid after March 1, but prior to the April 1 deadline may be made by payment of an additional penalty fee. Failure to renew a license prior to the April 1 deadline results in licenses automatically becoming inactive and subsequent practice in Kentucky is considered the unauthorized practice of medicine or osteopathy.

Re-registration of a Lapsed License

Physicians who have allowed their license to become inactive must contact the Board’s office at 502/429-7150 x 231, or email dawn.beahl@ky.gov in order to obtain a re-registration form.
